Effects of biochar on cement-stabilised peat soil

چکیده
Peat is a soft soil with very high organic content, which makes it highly susceptible to extreme differential settlement. Although cement stabilisation effective, not common practice due the cost of treatment associated binder dosage required. The use novel material, biochar, as potential replacement for and an alternative filler sand was investigated in this work. Biochar more sustainable than traditional construction materials has carbon dioxide sequestration ability. It could also potentially be cheaper or sand, depending on source feedstock used. Cement-treated peat used benchmark assess performance biochar-enhanced cement-treated peat. samples biochar finer 75 μm performed better equivalent, over 50% increase compressive strength. Furthermore, found that 100 kg/m 3 400 had comparable control sample 200 only, without highlighting partially replace cement. Scanning electron microscopy X-ray diffraction results showed mechanisms behind gain are both mechanical chemical nature.

Effects of biochar amendment on soil aggregates and hydraulic properties
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of biochar amendment on soil aggregate formation and stability, and soil hydraulic properties. Biochar produced from dairy manure was added to two different soils (a silty clay and a sandy loam soil) at a ratio of 2% (w/w in dry weight basis). Incubation experiments were conducted within a 90-d period with the soils (the controls) and the soi...
متن کاملGeotechnical properties of peat soil stabilised with shredded waste tyre chips
To accommodate major civil engineering projects in or in the vicinity of peatlands, it is essential to stabilise peat deposits. On the other hand, the accumulation of waste tyres in recent decades has caused environmental problems around the world. An effective remedy for both issues is to use scrap tyre material to stabilise problematic peat soils. This article reports an experimental investig...

We investigated the effects of chromate (CrVI) and phosphate (P) on their uptake and translocation in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata (PV). Plants were exposed to 1) 0.05 mM CrVI and 0, 0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mM P or 2) 0.25 mM P and 0, 0.05, 0.25 or 1.25 mM CrVI for 24 h in hydroponics. PV accumulated 2,919 mg/kg Cr in the roots at CrVI0.05, and 5,100 and 3,500 mg/kg P in the fronds and roots a...

World food security is under challenge to a great extent due to effects of climate change, continued population growth and resource-depleting practices on agriculture (IAASTD, 2009). Presently poor farmers use either organic manure or inorganic fertilizers (Mando et al., 2005; Topoliantz et al., 2005) for maintaining soil fertility as they cannot afford to apply fertilizers as a nutrient source...
